I was listening to my teens talking last week in our family living room. My two daughters were talking about a mutual friend of theirs. They were discussing that their female friend had met a guy across the country, but only online. Each day, they would use their Hotmail.com sign in to check for email from one another, and there, they would have long conversations with one another. One of my daughters asked, "Oh, you mean like pen pals?" My other daughter asked what that term meant. It was amusing to me that anyone today doesn't know what a pen pal is because it was a common term when I was growing up.
Back when I was in elementary school, there used to be a program that came on each day after school that I loved to watch. At the end of the program, the host would state that if you would like to meet people from around the people and become pen pals with them, all you had to do was send a letter to the host and he would personally hook you up with someone in another country. He also asked that you send him your age, sex and interests so that he could find someone like you from somewhere else for you to correspond with via mail.
I had two pen pals while growing up. One was a female from France, and the other one lived in Jordan. I loved hearing from them, and we wrote long letters. I was never sure if we would meet each other, but for the time being, I was just interested in getting letters and learning about them and helping them to learn about me. It took anywhere from a couple of weeks to a month for our letters to reach one another. But nowadays, we can talk to people so much easier.Discover A Lot More
My mom raised me after my father left when I was a small child. She has worked hard to make sure that I have the things that I have needed in life. She has told me how important it is to go to college, and I promised her that I would. She also said that she would help me pay for it, but I decided to try to do most of it on my own. I do a variety of things to make money, and one such way is by keeping up with scrap copper prices per pound and selling when the price is high. I also find other ways to keep bringing in money, too.
My mom still tries to find ways to help me pay my way through school. And I continue to try to find ways to tell her that I will be fine. The truth is that she has done so much for me already over the years. I really want to see her be able to just relax and start enjoying what little money she makes. For the longest time, she worked two jobs. It really took a toll on her, and she had to spend most of what she made on bills and getting buy. So, I'd rather just trying to make my own way, and she can put her money toward her retirement. She deserves that. And I hope that after I graduate, I can give back to mom financially as well.
Another thing that I do to make money is to mow lawns and do handyman work around where I live. We have a neighborhood email list where I advertise my services, and the neighbors keep me very busy. Almost too busy, because I often find myself feeling rushed when it comes to school. But I have no complaints because it is working out well.
My air conditioner is a lifeline for me in the summer months here in New York City. Even when the temperature is in the 70s, I like to turn it on because my house can become quite stuffy. When the temperatures are in the 80s or 90s, it becomes an absolute necessity. Well, I had to contact a company that does AC repair in NYC last month because my air conditioner was running but not putting out any cold air. I was thankful that the compressor was running, which indicated to me that there might just be a problem with the refrigerant level or even a leak.
I knew a few things to check, but I am really not extremely knowledgeable about how air conditioners work. I listened for any odd noises as well as any residue or debris that looked like it might be clogging the air conditioner. I was not able to find anything or hear anything though, which is why I decided to call the company that came out and fixed it. I knew that I could look at it for a month of Sundays and still not know what was wrong with it, so I just contacted them since they are the professionals.
When the technician came out, he was able to determine that it was just a simple problem with the refrigerant levels. He was able to recharge it, and it felt so blissfully cold after just a short period of time. It did not cost me very much money since it was such an easy fix, and it did not take a lot of time either. I am just so glad that it is fixed now that the weather is getting even warmer. I couldn't have went even a few hours without my air conditioner today!
We took a road trip. Our plan was to buy an RV and go traveling. We decided to stay in budget motels instead. We had a fabulous time over the winter and into the early summer. We were home for a couple of months when we had to call for bed bug removal in NYC. Somewhere on our trip staying at one of the budget motels we picked up the critters and brought them home with us. The experts in bed bugs said they probably came home in our luggage on our clothes. Is that creepy or what?
I was surprised to have bites after we were home and not while on the road. We actually were trying to be careful about that. We brought and washed our own linens. That is probably how they hitched a ride. We would put the dirty linens in a mesh laundry bag, stop at a laundromat, wash them and then put them on the bed at the next hotel. We had five sets so we did laundry once per week.
Now we had the critters in our own bed in our own home. The place that does bed bug removal in NYC assured us that they could eradicate them. However, even after the treatment looked to be a 100 percent success, we had a hard time sleeping in our bed. I would feel itchy just getting ready to go to sleep. We inspected each other's skin every morning looking for bites.
After none were found for a month or two, we began to relax. However, we did decide to buy a new mattress and box springs for our anniversary. Not that it will make any actual difference, but it will bring some peace of mind. We were due for a new bed anyway. At least that is what we are telling ourselves.
Just got a job with Henry County, the one in Georgia actually. I guess there are a good number of Henry counties. I know that there is one North of Winston Salem and Greensboro on the other side of the Virginia state line. I was not really looking for a new job, but I got this one out of the blue. A guy I used to work with got a big job here at the county and he hired me to fix this mess he has. I have spent the day looking at apartments in Stockbridge GA. I was looking at this one place, but then I got to thinking about the rail line right behind it and I found someone to ask about it. The apartment was about a hundred and fifty yards from a rail crossing and that is apparently where the trains blow their whistles long and hard every morning. I would not mind on the week days as much, but on Saturday and Sunday I am not going to want to have a train whistle wake me up with the sun rise.
The job pays a good bit better than the one I had, but the big thing is that it might lead some place. My buddy pointed out that my boss is 63 years old and the guy in line is just as old. Both of them have about thirty years in with the city and they are just bidiing their time until it is time to collect their pension. There are some other guys there, but they do not really look like anyone I should be scared of. It does not look like the county is wanting to have any of them take over the department. I need to show them that I have game though.Discover A Lot More
